Welcome > Local Info > Welcome ...

Below I have written some of my thoughts down about Montgomery County, the City of Conroe, Lake Conroe, the City of Montgomery and Willis. It also includes some web links that I think you will find interesting.

Montgomery County

I know I must sound like a broken record, but I love Montgomery County. Over the many years that I have lived here, I have seen it experience tremendous growth and have had the opportunity to experience much of what the county has to offer. I love the beautiful waters of Lake Conroe, the rich history of old town Montgomery, the rolling hills as you drive northward toward Huntsville, the rough and tumble mystique of Cut and Shoot, the thriving community of Conroe and the modern community of The Woodlands. Yes, I love it all.

But most of all, I love the friendly atmosphere. That's the primary reason my husband and I moved here back in the 70's. Compared to the hustle and bustle of Houston, Montgomery County always seemed to beckon its residents home to a more relaxed lifestyle.

Montgomery County has experienced tremendous growth over the last 10 years and is the 36th fastest growing county in the United States with a 2004 population of 360,000. Montgomery County is situated just north of Harris County, home of Houston, the largest city in Texas and the 4th largest city in the United States. It is a large county covering over a thousand square miles. It's elevation is slightly higher than its more coastal neighboring counties with elevations ranging from 150 to 300 feet.

Located in the East Texas Timberlands Region, it has many areas forested with pine, maple, oak and magnolia trees. Wildlife includes deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits and armadillos along with various snakes and birds.

With that overview, I will relay a little information about some of my favorite Montgomery County places.

Conroe

Many folks don't realize that Conroe has a history dating back to the 1830's. Once a sleepy agricultural town, Conroe is now a booming city with a population of more than 40,000. Conroe is the largest city, county seat and power center of Montgomery County.

During the past twenty years, the Conroe/Montgomery County economy has greatly diversified. No longer dependent on a handful of industries, Conroe has attracted a wealth of manufacturing, retail, health care, construction and tourism companies.

A very livable community, Conroe has a low crime rate, excellent health care and education, numerous public parks and a friendly, small-town atmosphere. There are more than 100 churches and synagogues in the area covering a wide variety of denominations and faiths. Plus, there is always something fun to do! Conroe boasts numerous cultural activities, festivals such as the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival and special events, while beautiful Lake Conroe and the adjacent Sam Houston National Forest offer a wide range of exciting recreational opportunities.

While visiting the area, enjoy Sam Houston National Forest, Southern Empress Cruises, Conroe Outlet Center, Historic Montgomery, Crighton Theatre featuring plays and musicals and concerts and of course, Lake Conroe

Visitors can also enjoy our unique history, golfing, restaurants and friendly people. Conroe is located only 40 minutes north of Houston, Texas.

To get more information about current events in Conroe and surrounding areas, check out the local newspaper.

Before we leave Conroe, I want to leave you with a list of some of my favorite restaurants in the Conroe area.

My husband has a penchant for Tex-Mex food.  One of his Tex-Mex restaurants is Los Cucos. It has been a mainstay in Conroe for many years and offers all of the Tex-Mex favorites at an affordable price.  My husband's favorite dish is the Pollo Poblano and I really enjoy their quesadillos. It's located at the southeast corner of north Loop 336 and I-45.

Italian food runs a close second in our book to Tex-Mex. Our favorite Italian eatery in the Conroe area is the Pizza Shack. It is up the highway a bit on FM 1097 towards downtown Willis, but is worth the drive. Don't let the name fool you, it has a nice ambience and offers a host of Italian dishes along with fantastic pizza. They also have a location in Montgomery.  Closer to the heart of Conroe is Joe's Pizza on North Frazier.  The serve Brick Oven Pizza - New York Style.  It's very good.

Another favorite place is Vernon's Kuntry Kitchen. It is located just west of Conroe on Hwy 105. They have delicious catfish dinners as well as shrimp, chicken fried steak and many other dishes. It is very affordable. I would advise you to get there early as it is a very busy place.

Conroe is fortunate to have one of the best barbeque places on the planet. It's McKenzie's Barbeque on Frazier Street in Conroe. They serve some of the absolute best barbeque I have ever tasted.

The above are just a few of our favorites in Conroe. But there are others as well. Other popular local restaurants including Rancho Grande Mexican Restaurant, Cinco de Mayo Mexican Restaurant, Hunan Village, Hyden's Seafood and Bayou Cajun Victuals. Conroe also has some well know chains, such as Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steakhouse, Steak and Ale, Chili's and Black Eyed Pea.

Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe was built in the early 70's and has been appropriately advertised as Houston's playground. Conveniently located about an hour north of Houston slightly west of I-45, Lake Conroe has been a popular area for tourists, weekenders and those who wish to enjoy lake living.

Lake Conroe covers approximately 22,000 acres. Much of the shoreline in the southern portion of the reservoir has been developed with numerous waterfront homes nestled on the water's edge. Much of the northern portion remains undeveloped as it is located in the Sam Houston National Forest

While the lake serves an important role as a reserve supply of water for the City of Houston, it also serves many of us as a source of recreation, whether for fishing, boating or simply enjoying a relaxing sunset over the water's edge.

Many people think of Lake Conroe in terms of water sports like skiing or just boating on the lake on a weekend afternoon.  Lake Conroe has also been a favorite for fishermen since it was first built.  Predominant species of fish in Lake Conroe include Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Channel Catfish and White and Hybrid Striped Bass.  It is interesting to note that some very large fish have been caught in Lake Conroe.  For example, an 86 lb flathead catfish was caught on 1/14/90, a 55 lb blue catfish on 6/16/83 and a 15 lb largemouth bass on 3/4/97.

Lake Conroe can be accessed from a number of points.  On the south side of Lake Conroe, the lake can be accessed year round along points off HWY 105 including April Plaza Marina, Inland Marina and Lakeview Marina.  Along the east side of Lake Conroe, it can be accessed at Anchorage Marina on FM 830, FM 830 ramp (no fee), and Stow-a-way Marina off Calvary Road.  On the northern end of Lake Conroe, the National Forest Service operates three access points; Stubblefield Lake, Cagle Recreation Area and Scott's Ridge.  Here is a link to a map for these access points.

Lake Conroe and the surrounding area has become a favorite spot for hundreds of thousands of people. If you haven't visited here yet, please come by and it will soon become one of your favorites as well.

Here are several Lake Conroe websites you will find very informative:

And here are a few of my favorite restaurants in the Lake Conroe area.

There is a small cozy Italian restaurant called Giovanni's Continental Cuisine.  It has a nice atomosphere and offers a superb menu.  It is located at 14860 Hwy 105 West.

An exciting new Mexican restaurant opened in the shopping center across from April Sound a year or two back. It's called Fajita Jack's Mexican Grill. It's a very fun and interesting place with good food.

There are several nice restaurants on Lake Conroe that you can enjoy lake side dining.  One is the Walden Yacht Club.  Another is The Waterside Inn on Lake Conroe.  Both are excellent.

In the new Waterpoint development, several new chain restaurants have opened.  They include Double Dave's Pizzaworks and Sam's Boat.

These are just a few of my favorite places. Others include Debby's Prime Steakhouse and Piano Bar, The Caddy Shack located on Walden Road and Eldorado Jack's on Marina Drive east of April Sound.

City of Montgomery

30 years ago, I had to drive west out of Conroe for about 15 miles on a small two lane winding road to get to the tiny town of Montgomery. My, but how that has changed. The two lane road is now a seven lane road and there is almost continuous development the entire way.

It is interesting to note that the City of Montgomery dates back to 1837 and was the original county seat of Montgomery County. It eventually lost its status as the county seat to up and coming Conroe in 1889.

Montgomery is still a small town with a 2000 census of 489 living in its 1 square mile jurisdiction. However, when residents in surrounding communities who identify themselves as living in Montgomery are considered, the populations swells to around 30,000.

Please check out this site to get more information about this interesting town. Or check out this site to get the latest news.

BElow are a few of my favorite places to eat in the Montgomery area.

The Heritage House has been in Montgomery as long as I can remember.  It has great food and a comfortable atmosphere that defines down home cooking.  It is on 105 on the west side of Montgomery.

Old Montgomery Steak House has very good traditional American food.  My husband loves a good chicken fried steak and this place has a good one.  It is located in the heart of Old Town Montgomery.

If you're hungry for German food, you may want to give Kaiserhof European Restaurant a try.  They have all the traditional German dishes.

In fact, there is something for everyone in Montgomery.  From beer and BBQ at Kirby's Lonestar Smokehouse to an authentic old world high tea at the Vintage Garden Tea House.

Real Estate Tips
Curb Appeal >Trees Improve Energy Efficiency

Mature trees add "curb appeal" to a property and can make a home more energy efficient. Planted at the edges of a building, a tree's broad canopy of leaves softens the hard lines of architecture and offers shade. Trees absorb light reflected from the roof and decrease the air temperature surrounding your home through evaporation of moisture.

The positioning of trees and shrubs around your home has a significant effect on how much you'll be paying to heat and cool your house each month. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even one strategically placed tree can reduce your heating and cooling bill up to 25 percent. In general, deciduous trees planted on the south and west sides of the house keep the home cool during the summer and allow low-angle sun into the home during the winter. If you live on a windy hill or coastal bluff, planting evergreen trees or shrubs on the north and west sides of your structure will help protect your home from winter gusts and storms.

Consult your landscape designer for advice about your particular property.
